Chapter Nine

Whether or not their detour drew attention, Brody managed to drive through the city without further delay or mishap. Angeline, calling on every pragmatic cell she possessed, exchanged her soiled top right there in the front seat next to Brody for a fresh T-shirt that Eva pulled out of the duffel for her. And the shirt was left, crumpled on the floorboard right along with the taxi that he parked in a teeming lot near the airport. The lot was already congested with cars—what was one more, even if it was big, bright and yellow?

Before they caught one of the city buses that carried them to yet another corner of Caracas, Brody instructed the kids to address him and Angeline as Mom and Dad from here on out. It seemed to bother them much less than it did Angeline, who sat there twisting the mock wedding ring around and around her finger.

Once more, they were showing more resilience than she felt. And if they were feeling paralyzed with worry over their real parents, they weren’t showing it.

The first bus was followed by three others until finally, they walked into a small, dusty building that sat at the end of an airstrip.

The International Airport it most certainly was not.

Fortunately, Angeline had had her share of experiences with small planes back in Wyoming, so she wasn’t completely thrown when in short order they were taking off in a minuscule six-seater piloted by a smiling young man who talked a mile a minute.

He didn’t seem to notice or care that Brody’s responses to his nonstop dialogue were few and far between. Calling them curt would have been charitable.

As for Angeline, she was kept plenty busy keeping Davey from squirming out of his safety belt because he was insatiably curious about everything. Keeping Davey contained was better than looking out the window, though, at the expanse of water beneath them.

When they landed, without incident, in Puerto Rico, Angeline had a strong, strong desire to drop to her knees and kiss the dusty unpaved runway on which they’d landed. Instead, she kept the children’s attention diverted from the exchange of money between Brody and the pilot.

Then it was a hair-raising cab ride—this time with the proper driver—and more money exchanged hands before they landed on the doorstep of Hacienda Paradise.

It was considerably smaller than even the hotel in Caracas had been, yet this one looked as if it had been designed as a vacation home away from home.

Pristine stucco looked particularly white with the vivid ochre arches over the doors and windows and the wealth of flowering bushes planted against the walls. Situated on a hillside, she could see the ocean beyond and despite the pervasively gray, cloudy sky, it was still a beautiful sight.

They went in through the colorful main door where the interior was as lovely and welcoming as the exterior. There was an expanse of gleaming terra-cotta tile, dozens of potted plants and warm rattan furnishings—all covered with cushions in varying patterns and colors that combined as a whole in pleasing results.
